16 “Clinic” here is an allusion to an illegal abortion “clinic.” Abortions were banned by decree 770 in 1966 in an effort to increase the population, and hence productivity, of Romania.

Import-Export

A political activity par excellence, the work of the GDPP cannot be done by anyone other than people deeply attached to our regime, with excellent political training, conscious of the responsibility our work bears.

The education of people in this spirit has been a guiding precept in the operations of this institution’s leadership, of the party’s organization, throughout the years. The most valuable result of this effort is the fact that the majority of specialized workers have been in our institution for over ten years. The presence in each work collective of a group of veteran readers, with a great deal of experience and prestige, has ensured a healthy work environment, as well as their prompt intervention when needed.

The GDPP ensures the inspection of all editorial products:

Social‐political publications:

– Editorial works (in the original and in translation) from the field of social sciences, party propaganda; works of a synthetic nature; lessons and plans for schools, brochures, documentary materials, et al.

– Publications for religious groups.

Literary and artistic publications:

– Editorial works (in the original and in translation) of literature: poetry, prose, dramas, theory, criticism, and literary history.

– Editorial works (in the original and in translation) in fine arts and musicology, for specialists and a general audience.

– Editorial works of a philological and linguistic nature.

Technical‐scientific publications.

Publications of a didactic nature.

These Exportsers are so pretentious, as if they were at the top of the pyramid and they were the ones doling out slices of the pie. For as long as I can remember being in the institution, that’s how they’ve been. Any birdbrain from this division feels entitled to boss others around and offer us free advice, that no one’s asked her for, ever. There’s no point in saying that what they do in Export is a piece of cake compared to what I used to do in Literature, my former department. Who pays any attention to their opinion regarding a book? When have they ever been punished for approving the import or export of a publication? It’s child’s play.

In general, I’ve observed that each department in Censorship is characterized by a prideful attitude (not always founded) and they all consider themselves to be more vital than the others! I admit: in my opinion, there’s no department more important than Literature and Art, where I come from. Without us, there simply wouldn’t be a reason for the institution to exist—fine, us and Press. Books and newspapers! But if you were to listen to the instructors, who work with those from the provinces, or if you were to listen to these fredericas from Export! They told me their names and I recalled only one, “Frederica,” and when I need something, I start with “comrade Frederica” and they all wrinkle their noses, as if I were offending them. Maybe they’d prefer Freezeria‐Diarrhea? Especially after
